What is obesity?

If you are struggling with significant excess weight, you are not alone. About one-third of American adults are overweight - that's 58 million people. More than 14 million are seriously overweight, about 5 million are morbidly obese. In West Virginia, more than 27.5% of adults are obese.

Morbid obesity affects millions of people, men and women of all ages, races and backgrounds. If you're one of them, you've probably tried "everything" to lose weight - diets, weight-loss pills, and exercise. But statistics show that virtually all of these efforts fail.

Obesity is a chronic, metabolic disease caused by multiple and complex factors, including increased calorie intake, decreased physical activity and genetic influences. Morbid obesity is a health condition defined as being at least 100 pounds over ideal body weight or the Body Mass Index (BMI) greater than 40.
