Revision weight loss surgery

Many patients have regained their weight after undergoing weight loss surgery in the past. They may have stretched their stomach pouch. This allows them to eat large portions resulting in gaining some, if not all of their weight back. However, the major reason for this failure is that they never received well structured post-surgical care. Many of these patients never received education on how to eat, what to eat, how to control portion or other post-surgical instructions. Consequently, without knowing, they ate more and more slowly to the point that their stomach pouch stretches too much. Unfortunatley, once the stomach pouch is stretched too much, it will not return to the recommended size.

There may be a passage through the staple lines from the previous stomach stapling procedures. Once this passage is created through the staples, the restrictive (porting limiting) effect of the surgery is lost.

At CAMC WLC, we do provide both laparoscopic and open revisional surgery for previously failed weight loss surgery. After going through a careful individualized consultation with your bariatric surgeon, we can determine whether you are a candidate for the revisional weight loss surgery. CAMC WLC will provide life-long follow-up cares to help you achieve your goals. In addition, a part of the evaluation will typically include X-ray studies of your stomach.
